    • Goodreads Choice Awards 2012

Posted at 10:08 am by Laura, on October 29, 2012

It’s that time of year! Goodreads will be hosting the annual Goodreads Choice Awards starting Tuesday, October 30.

      The Categories

Fifteen books will be nominated in twenty categories, which include Fiction, Mystery & Thriller, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Paranormal Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror, Romance, Memoir & Autobiography, History & Biography, Nonfiction, Food & Cookbooks, Humor, Graphic Novels & Comics, Poetry, Young Adult Fiction, Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction, Middle Grade & Children’s Books, Picture Books, and Goodreads Author.

      The Voting Rounds

      1. Round One — October 30 – November 11 — Voting will be open to the fifteen books across the twenty categories, as well as write-in votes.
      2. Round Two — November 12 – November 18 — The top five write-in votes will join the original fifteen, making 20 options across 20 categories. Additional write-ins no longer accepted.
      3. Round Three — November 19 – November 27 — Slashed in half, voters will choose from ten books across twenty categories. Make your vote count!

Winners will be announced December 4.

Which Books I Predict Will Be Nominated

I’m not a prolific reader, but I’m basing my predictions (in a handful of categories) for the nominations based on what I enjoyed and what I saw, as a bookseller, flying off the shelves.

      1. Fiction: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
      2. Romance: Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James (I really don’t want this to happen, but I predict it will)
      3. Memoir & Autobiography: No Easy Day by Mark Owen
      4. Young Adult Fiction: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
      5. Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare
      6. Middle Grade & Children’s Books: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

Log on tomorrow and start voting!!!

Which books do you hope to see? Which books do you predict will be nominated?

    • NPR’s Best YA Novels

Posted at 8:33 pm by Laura, on August 7, 2012

I’ve moved into my teeny tiny studio apartment on the east coast, started my new (semi-new…I’m a transfer) job yesterday, and looking forward to graduate school beginning in a month!

Enough about me – on with the book news!

Your Favorites: 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels – NPR

It’s almost a cliche at this point to say that teen fiction isn’t just for teens anymore. Just last year, the Association of American Publishers ranked Children’s/Young Adult books as the single fastest-growing publishing category.

Which is why we were only a little surprised to see the tremendous response that came in for this summer’s Best-Ever Teen Fiction poll. A whopping 75,220 of you voted for your favorite young adult novels, blasting past the total for last year’s science fiction and fantasy poll at, dare we say it, warp speed.

And now, the final results are in. While it’s no surprise to see Harry Potter and the Hunger Games trilogy on top, this year’s list also highlights some writers we weren’t as familiar with. For example, John Green, author of the 2012 hit The Fault in Our Stars, appears five times in the top 100.

I was one of the thousands that participated in this poll, and I’m very pleased to see that all the ones I voted for had made the list! Check this out! Add them to your to-read list on Goodreads!

    • ALA Hands Out First Adult Prizes – PW

Posted at 10:30 pm by Laura, on June 27, 2012

ALA Hands Out First Adult Prizes – Publisher’s Weekly – Andrew Albanese

A committee of librarians has done what Pulitzer Prize officials could not do this year: they selected a winning work of fiction, giving the first-ever Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction to Irish novelist Anne Enright for her book The Forgotten Waltz (W.W. Norton). Robert K. Massie, meanwhile, took home top honors for nonfiction for Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman (Random House).

Thank you, American Library Association! Click to find out more about the awards and the runners-up!

    • Liebster Blog Award

Posted at 8:08 pm by Laura, on May 15, 2012

Back in early April, A Novel Place nominated this blog for the Liebster Blog Award (liebster, as I already knew from living in a German family, means “beloved”)!  This award recognizes blogs that have less than 200 followers, acknowledging “the best kept secrets” in the blogosphere. I can’t even begin to thank Lauren enough for the nomination – definitely check out her bibliophile posts!

As a nominee, I have to nominate five blogs I believe are “the best kept secrets.”  I don’t follow too many blogs on WordPress, although I will point out my absolute favorites here and on Tumblr that I think will also shed light on my character 😉

      1. appazoogle – This blog was created by Boston’s Emerson College’s publishing graduate program, and focuses its work on understanding the publishing industry of yesterday and combining it with the latest tools and technologies of today. It’s an effort to work with instead of against the changing tides in publishing. Fun fact: the name derives from Apple + Amazon + Google. I thought that was pretty neat.

      2. Jane Austen’s World – I’m sure they have more than 200 followers, but I find this blog to be a gem anyway. It contains lots of historical information (door knockers, bicycles, latest fashion trends) on Austen’s lifetime, as well as information on the Austen family. If you like 18th-19th centuries and/or Austen, this is the blog for you!

      3. Savory Simple – A fantastic resource for fun, new recipes! There have been quite a few cookies and smoothies I’ve wanted to try. Just need to get over my fear of the oven and all things cookware…

      4. Pretty Books – Stacey is a phenomenal blogger! I follow her on Tumblr, Goodreads, and Twitter as well (phooo, I sound like a stalker…I’m sorry, Stacey!). She has excellent book reviews, and is definitely a resource for YA literature and dystopian literature. I’d go so far to say she’s an expert, with the amount she’s read, but maybe this is just my awe shining through. Seriously, check out this blog. I bow to her skill.

      5. AnglophilesAnon – Ah, a Tumblr! Yes, although this is mostly photos, Laura will reblog anything related to the UK, adding in locations and dates and naming the people in the photos. I’ve considered myself an anglophile but after following this blog for several months I have to say I definitely wasn’t much of one until I stumbled on here. Check it out!

2012 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced – New York Times

The 2012 Pulitzer Prizes, celebrating achievement in newspaper and online journalism, literature, nonfiction and musical composition, were announced Monday afternoon at Columbia University in New York. The prizes, given annually since 1917, are awarded in 21 categories.

No fiction winner, but there is a nonfiction winner, poetry winner, and a biography winner. Even better: the poetry winner came from an independent press!

Title: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened
Author: Jenny Lawson / The Bloggess
      Genre: nonfiction
      Publisher: Amy Einhorn Putnam
      Publishing Date: April 17
Summary: For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris-Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.
When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father (a professional taxidermist who created dead-animal hand puppets) and a childhood of wearing winter shoes made out of used bread sacks. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.
Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter are the perfect comedic foils to her absurdities, and help her to uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments-the ones we want to pretend never happened-are the very same moments that make us the people we are today.

      Title: White Horse
      Author: Alex Adams
      Genre: fiction, post-apocalyptic
Publisher: Atria / Emily Bestler Books
      Publishing Date: April17
Summary: Thirty-year-old Zoe leads an ordinary life until the end of the world arrives. She is cleaning cages and floors at Pope Pharmaceuticals when the President of the United States announces that human beings are no longer a viable species. When Zoe realizes that everyone she loves is disappearing, she starts running. Scared and alone in a shockingly changed world, she embarks on a remarkable journey of survival and redemption. Along the way, Zoe comes to see that humans are not defined by their genetic code, but rather by their actions and choices. White Horse offers hope for a broken world, where love can lead to the most unexpected places.

      Title: The Innocent
      Author: David Baldacci
      Genre: mystery
      Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
      Publishing Date: April 17
Summary: It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn’t seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable. He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn’t an ordinary runaway-her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can’t walk away. He needs to help her.
Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he’s convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents’ deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power.
Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl’s life . . . and perhaps his own.
