    • World Book Night 2013!

Posted at 9:15 am by Laura, on February 25, 2013

This will be my second year as a World Book Night Book Giver, and I am beyond excited! Last year, I handed out The Hunger Games to students on campus and had such a blast. The movie released a few days prior, which was incredibly helpful in getting people interested about the book.

This year I’m giving away John Green’s Looking for Alaska, the book that won awards, that was surrounded by controversy, that labeled John Green as an established author prior to the success of The Fault in Our Stars. I think I’m going to use that to my advantage when handing out the books and getting excited about reading. Looking for Alaska was THE BOOK nerdfighters chose to initiate new nerdfighters. And with the success of TFiOS (posters all over Barnes & Nobles across the nation, New York Times bestseller, best fiction of 2012), I think I can get more people interested as they’ll recognize Green’s name from all of the talk.

Oooooh, I can’t wait to head out and spread the word!

Are you a WBN giver? What book are you sharing with the world?

    • World Book Night 2013 — Send in your applications!

Posted at 3:10 pm by Laura, on November 16, 2012

I was incredibly honored and thoroughly loved being a World Book Night book giver in April, and I hope to be one again in 2013!

WBN has opened up for applications and will continue to accept them through January. Make sure to read up on the book choices and think of a giving plan (where you will give the books, who you give the books to, etc). You’ll have 20 copies to pass out to complete strangers and new readers, so prepare for your WBN Book Giver Speech!

In April I worked as a writing tutor for my university’s Learning Center. I worked with several international graduate students and freshmen struggling in English classes. I also worked in one of the smaller libraries on campus, the Architecture Library, and was able to pass out books there. As I was carrying a giant box of The Hunger Games, I was asked on buses and at bus stops what I was doing. After telling people — including a police officer — about WBN and my job as a giver, several were interested and asked if they could have a copy! Truly, these books fly out of your hands fast! You’d think a university campus wouldn’t be difficult, but very few college students read much of anything outside of the class list (if they even read those in the first place). Once offered something free and entertaining, they’re interested.

I highly encourage you to do this! It’s great fun!

    • WBN: Working On Night #2 – Shelf Awareness

World Book Night: Working on Night #2 – Shelf Awareness

Carl Lennertz, World Book Night U.S. executive director commented: “This is a very exciting time for World Book Night and I am so grateful for the support and guidance from such smart people. Year one in America was a resounding success in so many ways, thanks to all the volunteer book givers, booksellers, and librarians in every corner of the country. For 2013, we plan to do even more to elevate the discussion of books, reading, and giving before, on, and after April 23.”

So many exciting things happening for WBN! Check out the link to view the make-up of the steering committee! Some fantastic folks, by the looks of it.

    • World Book Night 2012 – TODAY!

Posted at 11:00 am by Laura, on April 23, 2012

What are you giving for World Book Night? How do you plan on making a reader?

I will be giving away The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and I couldn’t be more excited! I work in a university library as well as the campus Learning Center, where I tutor students on writing. My plan is to give the books to ESL students and those who struggle in their writing skills. This is for two purposes: to take a break from studies and experience American culture through literature, and to show that reading is fun as well as helpful in improving writing abilities.

Title: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened
Author: Jenny Lawson / The Bloggess
      Genre: nonfiction
      Publisher: Amy Einhorn Putnam
      Publishing Date: April 17
Summary: For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris-Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.
When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father (a professional taxidermist who created dead-animal hand puppets) and a childhood of wearing winter shoes made out of used bread sacks. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.
Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter are the perfect comedic foils to her absurdities, and help her to uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments-the ones we want to pretend never happened-are the very same moments that make us the people we are today.

      Title: White Horse
      Author: Alex Adams
      Genre: fiction, post-apocalyptic
Publisher: Atria / Emily Bestler Books

Summary: Thirty-year-old Zoe leads an ordinary life until the end of the world arrives. She is cleaning cages and floors at Pope Pharmaceuticals when the President of the United States announces that human beings are no longer a viable species. When Zoe realizes that everyone she loves is disappearing, she starts running. Scared and alone in a shockingly changed world, she embarks on a remarkable journey of survival and redemption. Along the way, Zoe comes to see that humans are not defined by their genetic code, but rather by their actions and choices. White Horse offers hope for a broken world, where love can lead to the most unexpected places.

      Title: The Innocent
      Author: David Baldacci
      Genre: mystery
      Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
      Publishing Date: April 17
Summary: It begins with a hit gone wrong. Robie is dispatched to eliminate a target unusually close to home in Washington, D.C. But something about this mission doesn’t seem right to Robie, and he does the unthinkable. He refuses to kill. Now, Robie becomes a target himself and must escape from his own people.
Fleeing the scene, Robie crosses paths with a wayward teenage girl, a fourteen-year-old runaway from a foster home. But she isn’t an ordinary runaway-her parents were murdered, and her own life is in danger. Against all of his professional habits, Robie rescues her and finds he can’t walk away. He needs to help her.
Even worse, the more Robie learns about the girl, the more he’s convinced she is at the center of a vast cover-up, one that may explain her parents’ deaths and stretch to unimaginable levels of power.
Now, Robie may have to step out of the shadows in order to save this girl’s life . . . and perhaps his own.
