    • 2020 Bookish Resolutions & Reading Goals

Posted at 10:15 am by Laura, on December 31, 2019

      Major Goals

READ 45 BOOKS || I barely hit this goal (43 instead of 45) in 2019 for a number of reasons, but just like my goal in 2019 I want to focus on quality over quantity, and I’m very pleased with my reading year in 2019. It is my hope to do the same for 2020!

READ 15 LIBRARY BOOKS || This shouldn’t be hard, considering I’ve read so much from the library already and I definitely plan to read more again this year too! It goes hand-in-hand with my next goal…

BARGAIN BUY || In an effort to make better purchasing decisions on a slim budget, I will focus my efforts to reading library books and making bargain purchases––coupons, XY% off, second-hand, etc––and only buy brand new, full price items for hot ticket, highly coveted, would’ve-dropped-money-no-matter-what books I’ve been excited for and waiting on for ages. This isn’t just nice for the wallet, but also for my buckling bookcases, which leads to…

READ MORE FROM TBR || …reading from those buckling bookcases! I threw my money at all of these books I’m still very excited to read, so perhaps I should read them.

      Bonus Goals

READ MORE GABALDON / MARILLIER || You guys, I have all of their books. I need to read them. And get back into the binge-reading style I so loved before blogging!

READ MORE GENRE FICTION || OOOOOOWEEEEE I love fantasy and historical! Last year my goal was to get into more mysteries, and I did via the historical fiction route. I think I’ll continue doing that, and also add some more sweeping epic fantasies on my list too. Many of them I already own. So again…these goals go hand-in-hand quite nicely!

    • 2019 Bookish Resolutions and Reading Challenges

Posted at 9:15 am by Laura, on December 31, 2018

To be perfectly honest, there were only a handful of standout books I read in 2018. I see my progress on Goodreads and looking back on the year doesn’t bring me much satisfaction or joy. With precious little time to spend reading for pleasure, I hope my goals in 2019 will help curate a great reading list on which to reflect and be proud.

      Major Goals

READ 45 BOOKS || I’ve had to come to terms within the last year that challenging myself to fifty books really is, um, quite the challenge. Which is both good and bad. It means I’m spending more time dedicated to reading great manuscripts, but it also means finding the time to read for fun is getting limited. A friend suggested not setting a Goodreads goal, or feeling obligated to stick to it, and the mentality of it would change. Even still, I’ll shoot for forty-five great books this year! (I’ve already accepted there may be lots of DNFing.)

READ 10 LIBRARY BOOKS || That won’t be hard, to be honest. I’ve been reading more and more from the library recently — I have a feeling I may surpass ten library books!

READ MARILLIER AND GABALDON || Like I said last year (and failed) and the year before (and also failed), I want to read more Marillier and Gabaldon. It’s almost necessary now for Gabaldon, since Outlander season five will be out in 2019, and I haven’t finished that book yet! And for Marillier, I own so many of her books and left them unread, and really need to get through that pile.

      Bonus Goals

READ MORE FROM TBR || Last year my goal was to read more from my TBR and less from ARCs. And I think overall an aspect of that went really well — I did read fewer ARCs! But I haven’t been very good with my TBR. Just take a look at my bookshelves, shaming me here in the living room as I type this…

READ MORE GENRE FICTION || Part of my job at the library is to expand my readers advisory knowledge, and one genre I’m lacking in is mystery. I think I can dive into the genre with something more familiar to me — like historical fiction. There are a few historical mysteries on my TBR so I’ll start with those and go from there!

    • 2017 Bookish Resolutions and Reading Challenges

Posted at 9:15 am by Laura, on December 19, 2016

      2017bookishresolutions

      Major Goals

READ 50 BOOKS || To quote last year’s post, “easy peasy.” Though it has become a bit more of a challenge the last couple years , I’m looking forward to reading 50 published books.

READ 5 LIBRARY BOOKS || I’ll automatically read 24 books this year with the library (12 for the book club I run, and 12 for the genre study book club I’m in), but I want to read (deeply, for fun and entertainment) books that aren’t assigned to me that I’ve been curious to read.

READ MARILLIER & GABALDON || Flights of Fantasy by Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books || This harkens back to an epiphany post from a few weeks ago. I want to get back to my bookish roots, which involved a lot of binge-reading — of authors, of series, of genre. Juliet Marillier’s Sevenwaters series, her new Blackthorn & Grim series, and finishing Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series (of what’s published, at least) are at the top of my reading list. This automatically qualifies for Alexa’s fantasy challenge, too!

      Bonus Goals

READ CLASSICS & REREAD FAVORITES || I was woefully terrible at this last year, and I still aim to read more classics in general. I also didn’t reread many of my favorite novels. Instead of putting a number goal on there (and potentially disappointing myself at the end of 2017), I’m aiming to at least read one of each!

READ MORE FROM TBR, LESS FROM ARCS || Rock My TBR by Sarah @ The YA Book Traveler || I don’t have a general number for this one, but I do want to make more of an effort to read all those books I’ve purchased and was very excited for. This means being pickier about ARCs as well. While I didn’t read as many ARCs in 2016 (which was a goal), I did end up neglecting many ARCs I received.

What are some of your goals for 2017?

    • 2016 Bookish Resolutions & Reading Challenges

Posted at 3:10 am by Laura, on January 2, 2016

      2016bookishresolutions

READ 50 BOOKS || Easy peasy. I’ve been doing this every year. It’s always a challenge to see if it’ll get done, what with agenting and all. 2016 will be especially difficult because there are a lot of travels planned (and, strangely enough, I don’t read much when I’m traveling).

READ FEWER ARCs || ARCs are important. I’ll always love receiving them. But I think I hit my max in the number of ARCs to read and review in 2015, and I’d like to take a step back from that in 2016. My primary job is to find new manuscripts — to be the hipster in the publishing industry (cause that’s what agents are!). I’ll be more selective in the ARCs I accept for review, just like how I’m selective in the manuscripts I read.

REREAD 5 FAVORITES || Last year I made a goal of rereading 10 favorite books, and only managed to complete 3 and nearly finish another. Five seems like a more achievable goal.

READ 10 LIBRARY BOOKS || I’m debating between making this 10 library books and 15 library books — either way, read more books from the library! One does not need to buy all the new books when you could easily check them out from the library and decide if they’re worth keeping in your own personal library later on. I managed to read 7 books from the library in 2015, so I think 10-15 seems a good range.

PURCHASE NO MORE THAN 5 NEW BOOKS || This will be the tough one. I could never quite follow the “for every 5 books read, 1 unread book can be purchased” resolution I’d make in previous years, because…well, are ARCs part of the list? Or was it 5 already published books? And because I was wishy washy with the definition, I wouldn’t keep track of the number of books I read and just bought stuff whenever I felt like it. Now I have something to keep track. Only 5 completely-new-to-me, never-been-read-in-any-format-ever-before books.

      Reading Challenges

This year I’m participating in four reading challenges, all quite naturally. While I have a goal to read fewer ARCs, more library books, and tackling my TBR, these challenges can also keep me in line a bit with all of them.

      2016classicschallenge1

I’ve told Stacey @ The Pretty Books that I would participate in her Classics Challenge ever since she started this, and two years have gone by and I haven’t kept my word. NOW I WILL! I plan to read at least five classics in 2016, four of the five on my TBR bookcase and one of them I’ve been eyeing for a couple years now. Might as well snag it from the library!

      flightsoffantasy-2016

Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books is a massive fantasy fan, and we tend to share similar reading preferences. This year I decided I would join her Flights of Fantasy reading challenge. It’s quite simple: read fantasy books. Well, I have loads of those on my TBR bookcase, so I’m planning to read at least five fantasy books in 2016.

      ReRead2016Graphic

I’m continuing in the Re-Read Challenge in 2016, now hosted solely by Kelly @ Belle of the Literati (because former co-host Hannah @ So Obsessed With will be busy with a little bundle of joy!), and like I said in my resolutions, I plan to re-read five books in 2016.

      rockmytbr

And last but not least, there’s actually a challenge out there for reading books off your TBR shelves! Sarah @ The YA Book Traveler is hosting the Rock My TBR Challenge, and all you need to do is read at least one book a month off your shelves. I will certainly read more than one a month in 2016.

As you can see, these challenges will easily overlap with one another. They’re not challenges so much as ways to make me accountable for what I’m resolving to do in 2016. We all need a little something to keep us in line, right?

What are your bookish resolutions for 2016? Are you participating in any reading challenges (and if so, which ones)?

      2015 bookish resolutions

      Book Expo America

I’ve wanted to attend for several years now. While I lived closer just a few months ago, the draw to BEA is stronger than ever now that I’ve moved inland. Attending as a book blogger and bookseller and literary agent feels like the trifecta of incentive, so I’m hoping I can scrap enough together to make it back out east and experience the bibliophile chaos. Back-up: attend YALLfest or YALLwest.

      Reading 10 Library Books

This was a resolution last year, and it was not upheld whatsoever. I’ve gone to the library, but I haven’t checked out books. I work in a bookstore that has a hardcover-exclusive library system for the booksellers, but I only took advantage of it once and didn’t even read the book. Lame. I need to do that right now, especially if I’m in the habit of buying hardcovers lately. Plus, there are so many books available in libraries that are on my TBR list. I should take advantage of this!

Buy 1 for Every 5 Read

I tried this last year, and it worked for a while. I was cranking out ARC reviews, occasionally read a book from my shelf, and then immediately purchased a book. But once my birthday hit (gift cards! Free books!), and then employee appreciation weeks (heavily discounted books!), and then the beginning of lit agenting (more gift cards!), I lost track of how many books I read to warrant how many I could buy. For shame. I have 175+ books I own but haven’t read, and I really need to start working on that.

      The Re-Read Challenge of 2015

Having said that, I do want to reread some of my favorites. Belle of Literati and So Obsessed With are hosting a Re-Read Challenge, a break from TBR piles and re-experiencing our favorite books. (Thanks Lindsey for pointing this out!) It’d be nice to not feel the pressure of reading for the sake of reviewing, or reading before publication. Read more about the challenge the and books I chose here!

      Read 50 Books

10 library books + 10 favorites = 20 already in line. The next 30 will be a mixture of ARCs, books I’ve purchased but haven’t read yet, and any new ones coming out in 2015. When you think about it, this really narrows down my selection. While I’ve surpassed my goal of 50 Books in 2014, I’m also not counting the endless number of manuscripts I read as an agent for potential representation, the hours of editing the acquired manuscripts, etc. So…in a way…50 books might be a bit difficult to reach this year.
