    • #ReRead2015 Book 3: Anna and the French Kiss

      Re-Read Challenge

Hannah @ So Obsessed With and Kelly @ Belle of the Literati are hosting a new, fun challenge for bloggers in 2015: The Re-Read Challenge! Not much of a “challenge,” per se, because why wouldn’t you want to re-read and re-experience some of your favorites? Sign up and start re-reading!

      Book #3 of 2015:
      Anna and the French Kiss

      9754815

      WHEN I First Read

July 2014! I started it on the plane to Denver, where I was going to spend a girls’ weekend with my surrogate sisters. I blazed through about half of it on the flight, and then stayed up late into the night/early morning finishing the rest.

      WHAT I Remember

What sticks out to me the most in my memory of reading this book was the fluttery, giggly feelings I had while reading it. I loved that first love confusion, the study abroad experience, that Étienne wasn’t your standard, hulking male lead (come on, he’s three inches shorter than Anna! Most girls stop interest if a guy’s shorter!), and that there’s a scene when he calls Anna out on her need for cleanliness.

      HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

As you can see from my updates, I rediscovered a lot about this book. Nearly every chapter had a comment on Anna’s part regarding the cleanliness of a place — the water in a park pool, the way objects rest on shelves, the sheets in another’s room — and it was stated early on that her ex Matt disliked her Atlanta crush Toph. I paid more attention to what was going on with Étienne this time around. While I dislike the fact he took so long to end things with Ellie (and essentially cheated on her constantly with Anna, even if it wasn’t physical), I completely understood where he was coming from. His life really was in turmoil, and he tried so hard to keep things the same, yet wanted so badly to change things for the better. I’m still giggly and fluttery, although I think I’d rate this book 4.5 instead of 5 (Isla is my favorite!) in hindsight.

      WOULD I Re-Read Again

Oh yes, though I don’t think I would go to this two summers in a row. Maybe next summer I’ll read Lola!

      Fangirl

      WHEN I First Read

March 2014, exactly one year ago! *hugs book*

      WHAT I Remember

I remember Cath being a very introverted character, with high social anxiety. I remember Levi being incredibly understanding. I remember her obsession with Simon Snow, a character similar to Harry Potter. I remember that her roommate had a bit of a forceful personality, and that Cath sometimes felt insecure around her twin sister, The Better One.

      WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

If you have eyes and ears, you’ve read and listened to my ramblings about how much I love this book. I’d keep saying over and over, “I am Cath!” But am I really? Was it just first-time-reading shining through and blurring reality? I was curious to see if that connection still held. Plus, Levi.

      HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

In short? Even more in love than before. I’d forgotten just how extroverted Levi and Reagan were, how wild Wren got, how damaged their father was, how uncomfortable Cath became around her writing partner Nick, how unsure she felt making up her first semester final for Fiction-Writing, how pressured she was to finish Carry On before the final Simon Snow book came out. But on each and every page, I felt like I was reading a version of myself in high school and college, a little bit of who I am now. Cath, I wish you were real! We’d be best friends.

      WOULD I Re-Read Again

Oh, of course. I’d probably wait longer than a year. It’d be interesting to see this again at 28 or 30. Would I still feel like Cath? Would I remember all the other stories wrapped around her first year of college?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

      WHEN I First Read

Gosh, whenever the book actually came out in paperback! 2002? I then re-read the book again before OotP, HBP, and DH, and then never after that.

      WHAT I Remember

I remember loving the international aspect of this book, all the schools coming together. I remember the World Cup and the Dark Mark connection to Crouch/Moody. I remember the sexual awakening aspect with Harry/Cho, Ron/Fleur, and Hermione/Krum. I remember the Yule Ball. Voldemort’s back. “Bring my body back.” “Remember Cedric Diggory.”

      WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

When I became a beta for Pottermore I wanted to re-read the books after playing the games within each book. Then I fell behind when Pottermore’s GoF came out. That, plus this great opportunity challenge, kicked my butt into gear!

      HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

Ashamed (how could I forget all the Crouch/Moody connections apart from the potion? Or Rita Skeeter’s involvement in everything as well as her beetle self? Or the Weasley twins’ efforts to build their business? Or that Beauxbatons and Durmstrang brought boys and girls from each school?). Shocked (this really is quite dark! I knew that when I read it as a kid but…whoa). Amused (so many jokes!). Transported (Hogwarts is my home).

      WOULD I Re-Read Again

Of course! In a couple years. Harry Potter is a classic.

      What I Plan to Re-Read: 10 Books

      I want to…

…sit back and relive the Hogwarts experience (gotta catch up with Pottermore and reread Goblet of Fire (1) and Order of the Phoenix (2) (which will be terrible because I haven’t reread OotP since the day it came out. There’s a dent in my bedroom wall from where I threw the book. You know what brought that on. Don’t even ask).

…fall into the magic of The Night Circus (3).

…sob my eyes out over The Fault in Our Stars (4).

…giggle with Anna in Anna and the French Kiss (5).

…seek independence with Jane Eyre (6).

…dive into the suspense of The Likeness (7).

…agree completely with Emma in One Day (8).

…completely understand Cath on every level in Fangirl (9).

…remember why Kate Morton rocks my world in The House at Riverton (10).
