      advanceexcitement2015

A monthly meme to keep up with the latest publications, featuring advance copy reviews to look forward to reading.

It seems so many of my favorite authors have new books out in October. Some long-time favorites like Jodi Picoult (October 4) and Tana French (October 4), a new favorite in Emma Mills (October 4), a middle grade debut from Megan Shepherd (October 11), Kenneth Oppel‘s latest (October 11), and Marie Benedict’s debut book The Other Einstein (October 18) are all titles I’m looking forward to reading.

But this one in particular holds a special place in my heart.

      28686840

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven
      (October 4, Knopf BFYR)

Everyone thinks they know Libby Strout, the girl once dubbed “America’s Fattest Teen.” But no one’s taken the time to look past her weight to get to know who she really is. Following her mom’s death, she’s been picking up the pieces in the privacy of her home, dealing with her heartbroken father and her own grief. Now, Libby’s ready: for high school, for new friends, for love, and for EVERY POSSIBILITY LIFE HAS TO OFFER. In that moment, I know the part I want to play here at MVB High. I want to be the girl who can do anything.

Everyone thinks they know Jack Masselin, too. Yes, he’s got swagger, but he’s also mastered the impossible art of giving people what they want, of fitting in. What no one knows is that Jack has a newly acquired secret: he can’t recognize faces. Even his own brothers are strangers to him. He’s the guy who can re-engineer and rebuild anything in new and bad-ass ways, but he can’t understand what’s going on with the inner workings of his brain. So he tells himself to play it cool: Be charming. Be hilarious. Don’t get too close to anyone.

Until he meets Libby. When the two get tangled up in a cruel high school game—which lands them in group counseling and community service—Libby and Jack are both pissed, and then surprised. Because the more time they spend together, the less alone they feel. . . . Because sometimes when you meet someone, it changes the world, theirs and yours.

Niven is such a remarkable woman, and All the Bright Places moved me. I can’t wait to dive into her next!

Also, it looks like all of my money will be gone October 4th…*prepares bank account*

A monthly meme to keep up with the latest publications, featuring advance copy reviews to look forward to reading.

It’s been a while since my last one! Hopefully I can stick to an ARC push plan and provide some reviews for great upcoming books. I received several ARCs during BEA that I’m hoping to get to and review on the blog, including The Forgetting (September 13), The Secrets of Wishtide (September 13), Stalking Jack the Ripper (September 20), Like a River Glorious (September 27, sequel to Walk on Earth a Stranger), The Tea Planter’s Wife (September 27), and The Inquisitor’s Tale (September 27).

PHEW! That’s a lot of reading. But I have to say the ARC I’m most excited for is here below:

      23203252

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess
      (September 20, Random House BFYR)

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames.
Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, she’s shocked when instead of being executed, she’s invited to train as one of Her Majesty’s royal sorcerers. Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London, Henrietta is declared the chosen one, the girl who will defeat the Ancients. She also meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, young men eager to test her power. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her.

But Henrietta Howel is not the chosen one.
As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city?

When I opened up the galley and read the first couple pages, I couldn’t help but think “This is Hermione’s Harry Potter book!” I’m beyond stoked to read this!

Holy massive month of releases. Some of my favorites — Morgan Matson, Stacey Lee, Stephanie Perkins, Jessica Brockmole, SJ Maas — and some potential newbies, like The Crown’s Game and Sing, all come out in May. But one book I’m particularly excited about, Traitor Angels by Anne Blankman, releases in just a few days!

      25862970

      Traitor Angels by Anne Blankman
      (Balzer + Bray, May 3)

Six years have passed since England’s King Charles II returned from exile to reclaim the throne, ushering in a new era of stability for his subjects.

Except for Elizabeth Milton, the daughter of notorious poet John Milton. By day she helps transcribe his latest masterpiece, the epic poem Paradise Lost, and by night she learns languages and sword fighting. Although she does not dare object, she suspects that he’s training her for a mission whose purpose she cannot fathom.

When the king’s men arrest him, Elizabeth follows his one cryptic clue and journeys to Oxford, accompanied by an Italian scientist, Antonio Vivani. When the two discover that Milton has planted an explosive secret in the half-finished Paradise Lost—a secret the king and his aristocratic supporters are desperate to conceal—Elizabeth is faced with a devastating choice: cling to the shelter of her old life or risk cracking the code.

Nerd book of nerdy proportions. Give it to me now.

Last month I was awful and didn’t get to either of the books on my AEaaG post. Here’s hoping April releases have better luck. And there are so many to look forward to! If you love historical fiction, get your hands on Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly (April 5) and Fever at Dawn by Péter Gárdos (April 12). For some crazy adventure, Love, Lies, and Spies by Cindy Astney (April 19) may be just the thing. Finally, fantasy and diversity seekers should get their hands on The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi (April 26). You already read my review of Lady Renegades (April 5), so let’s dive into what I’m super focused on…

      25663637

When We Collided by Emery Lord
      (Bloomsbury, April 5)

Vivi craves anything joyful or beautiful that life can offer. Jonah has been burdened by responsibility for his family ever since his father died. Their love is the answer to everything. But soon Vivi’s zest for life falters, as her adventurousness becomes true danger-seeking. Jonah tries to keep her safe, but there’s something important Vivi hasn’t told him.

At the time I’m writing this post, I’m a quarter into the book and am already mesmerized. Plus, it’s Emery Lord. I love Emery Lord. All hail Emery Lord.

March is jam-packed and full of new releases. I already reviewed two (Into the Dim on March 1 and The Forbidden Orchid on March 8), but there are some more titles I’d love to feature and promote!

      25620676

      Hanging Mary by Susan Higginbotham
      (Sourcebooks Landmark, March 1)

In 1864 Washington, one has to be careful with talk of secession. Better to speak only when in the company of the trustworthy, like Mrs. Surratt. A widow who runs a small boarding house, Mary Surratt isn’t half as committed to the cause as her son, Johnny. If he’s not escorting veiled spies, he’s inviting home men like John Wilkes Booth, the actor who is even more charming in person than he is on the stage. But when President Lincoln is killed, the question of what Mary knew becomes more important than anything else.

Hanging Mary is based on the true history of Mary Surratt. For those of us interested in historical fiction and obsessing over Mercy Street…you’re welcome.

      22428707

The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins
      (HarperTeen, March 8)

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

If you like your fairytales a bit more Grimm-based, this retelling of “The Singing Bone” just might be what you’re looking for.

Once again, February this year proves to be another great month for new releases. CJ Redwine‘s new fantasy series begins with The Shadow Queen and some great adult fiction by A.A. McDonald and Julie Christine Johnson hit stores this month.

This book in particular is what I’m most excited for…

      25614492

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
      (Philomel, February 2)

I’m not going to give a quick synopsis, because her name carries so much weight all on its own. This is going to be brilliant. And huge. And even more gut-wrenching than Between Shades of Gray, which I didn’t even think was possible.

Be prepared for a book hangover with this one.

There are too many exciting books coming out in January: Geek Girl: Picture Perfect, Anna and the Swallow Man, Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, This is Where it Ends, The Radiant Road, and Moonlight Over Paris, to name a few. (Ha. A few.)

I’m going to do my best to read at least one of these ARCs for review ahead of publication date, but until then I’ve another ARC to share. Remember my flailings over a MG gothic detective mystery series? Well, another one’s coming out!

The Case of the Girl in Grey by Jordan Stratford
      (Knopf BFYR, January 26)

The Wollstonecraft Detective Agency was supposed to be a secret constabulary, but after the success of their first case, all of London knows that Lady Ada and Mary are the girls to go to if you have a problem. Their new case is a puzzle indeed. It involves a horrible hospital, a missing will, a hasty engagement, and a suspiciously slippery servant. But Mary’s stumbled onto a mystery of her own. She spotted a ghostly girl in a grey gown dashing through the park. A girl who is the spitting image of their new client.

There are so many great titles coming out in October, I doubt I’ll be able to keep up with all of them! Two of the featured ARCs here are favorites, either for the content or for the author. One was part of my #ARCAugust challenge, and another part of a readalong, #KMflails.

A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis
      (Katherine Tegen Books, October 6)

I’m not even going to put a description here for the following reasons:

      1. It’s too great to accurately put into words.
      2. It has everything you could want from a well-researched, thrilling, mysterious, literary, historical YA.
      3. My review will be posted Friday anyway.

      22609128

The Lake House by Kate Morton
      (Atria Books, October 20)

Living on her family’s gorgeous lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a clever, innocent, and precociously talented fourteen-year-old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure. One midsummer’s eve, the Edevanes discover that their youngest son, Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined, leaving their estate as empty as their sunken hearts.

Nearly sixty years later, having enjoyed a long, successful career as an author, Alice is now living in London. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbors a suspicion as to the culprit. Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate—now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked and sets off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone, yet more present than ever.

Another brilliant Morton coming soon, eh? If you love her previous work, you’ll enjoy this one too!

Remember #ARCAugust? Lucky you, there are several September releases lined up in the queue! I’m hoping to get to each of them before they’re published, so for now I will feature a few of the ones I have reviews ready for reading.

      18304322

      Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy
      (Balzer + Bray, September 15)

You must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about this one yet. Therefore, I will not go into detail. You’ll just have to wait for tomorrow’s review!

      18190201

      The Doldrums by Nicholas Gannon
      (Greenwillow, September 29)

Archer B. Helmsley has grown up in a house full of oddities and treasures collected by his grandparents, the famous explorers. Archer B. Helmsley longs for adventure. Grand adventures, with parachutes and exotic sunsets and interesting characters. But how can he have an adventure when he can’t leave his house? It helps that he has friends like Adélaïde L. Belmont, who must have had many adventures since she ended up with a wooden leg. (Perhaps a crocodile ate it. Perhaps not.) And Oliver Glub. Oliver will worry about all the details (so that Archer doesn’t have to). And so Archer, Adélaïde, and Oliver make a plan. A plan to get out of the house, out of their town entirely. It’s a good plan. But nothing goes quite as they expect.

This is unique and whimsical and heartwarming and hilarious and omigod the art. The Doldrums is a middle grade book you do not want to miss.

Since I announced my summer reading plans, I found it incredibly ironic that I ended up reading less than I expected. Fifteen-ish books lined up and ready to read, and what’s happened? I’ve slacked off a bit. Hmm.

But there are loads of ARCs for August, September, and October coming up, thanks to BEA. This month, I’m hoping to read and review this MG work!

      24885821

The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell
(Simon & Schuster BFYR, August 25)

Feo’s life is extraordinary. Her mother trains domesticated wolves to be able to fend for themselves in the snowy wilderness of Russia, and Feo is following in her footsteps to become a wolf wilder. She loves taking care of the wolves, especially the three who stay at the house because they refuse to leave Feo, even though they’ve already been wilded. But not everyone is enamored with the wolves, or with the fact that Feo and her mother are turning them wild. And when her mother is taken captive, Feo must travel through the cold, harsh woods to save her—and learn from her wolves how to survive.

I’ll read anything by Katherine Rundell. Truly. Toss in the fact this is set in Russia and I’m practically drooling all over the keyboard.
