Top Ten Tuesday, a concept started by The Broke and the Bookish, is a themed post that connects bloggers to bloggers, bloggers to readers, and readers to readers. Every Tuesday has a special topic, and this Tuesday is Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2013.
There were many new-to-me authors I read this year, partly because of my thesis and partly because I enjoyed so many debuts. This list, seemingly easy, became rather difficult to narrow down. Here I go!
- Laini Taylor (her website, her Twitter)
- Rachel Hartman (her website, her Twitter)
- Patricia Bracewell (her website)
- Laura Bickle (her website, her Twitter)
- C.J. Redwine (her website, her Twitter)
- Page Morgan (her website, her Twitter)
- Jo Baker (her website)
- Neil Gaiman (his website, his Twitter)
- Jessica Brockmole (her website, her Twitter — also an Indiana native!)
- Matt Phelan (his website, his Twitter — met him in one of my graduate courses!)

YES! C.J. Redwine! Love her books! And Rachel Hartman, another fabulous author!
I really want to read Page Morgan’s books! The covers are BEAUTIFUL!
Great list! Glad you’ve found so many new and great authors this year!

By the way… I LOVE the snow falling on your blog! It’s so cool! 🙂
Laura
You really should read Morgan. She’s got a whole new twist on paranormal romance, gothic, fantasy adventure thing. If you are tired of the vampire/angel/werewolf love interests, you ought to read her stuff. And if you like Cassandra Clare or Victorian literature or anything along those lines, pick up her books!
As for the snow — that’s all WordPress! I wish I knew how they did it!

I’ve read Neil Gaiman, just not enough of him! Only Coraline, Stardust and The Graveyard Book. Glad to see someone else discovering him though! 🙂

Those are two more than me! I’ve seen the Coraline and Stardust movies, so I better get a move on with the books.

I liked Neverwhere best so far of his books, but I haven’t read The Ocean at the End of the Lane yet. The movie of Neverwhere was kind of low-budget, so I liked the book better than the movie. I keep hoping they’ll remake it 🙂

Laini Taylor and Page Morgan are fantastic authors! I haven’t read the others you mentioned but I love those two but only Taylor made my list.
Here’s my Top TenTuesday Post 🙂

Taylor was recommended by a friend, and Morgan is for my thesis! I’m so glad I read them.

Hi Laura,
Laini Taylor was new to me last year, or she might have made my list. She also wrote a good review in the NY Times of Leigh Bardugo’s “Shadow and Bone” which led me to read that one as well.
Coralline may be my next Gaiman, but many have recommended that I include some of his short stories in my annual short story reading project as well.

P.S. you noted that one of your ten was an Indiana native. I blog from the Indy area. Haven’t run across that many other IN book bloggers. Do you know of any more?
Laura
Unfortunately I do not! Are you an Indiana blogger?
terribruce
Interesting list – I haven’t read any of these! I like what you say above in the comments about Morgan though – I am kinda over the vampire/werewolf thing and have been looking for something different. Will definitely have to check her out!
Laura
You really ought to! Plus the argument for how men are turned into gargoyles is sound — follows the gargoyle myth (keeping sin away from churches, the evil out, etc).
terribruce
Oooh, interesting! I love Gargoyles and they definitely haven’t been done all that much. I will definitely check her out now!!! 🙂

I aodre CJ Redwine! More people need to read her!!!! So excited for the final book! I’m also eager to finally read Rachel Hartman once the sequel to SERAPHINA is out…silly cliffhangers! Ooh, and Neil Gaiman, nice choice!!
Laura
I have no idea when SERAPHINA’s sequel is coming out, and it’s torture!!!
CJ Redwine is brilliant. I recommend her all the time whenever someone says they like dystopian but want more romance, a little less “kids killing kids” scenario.
